It’s sad, but true, that justice almost always needs to be fought for and won. Those without power are without voices, and too often, they are exploited. Animals are literally without voices, and they need yours. Advocacy may seem daunting, but it’s important to remember that every fight for justice starts with ONE voice. ONE person who was heard by others who took strength from it, and joined them in taking action.

None of the awesome advocates featured here could have known the amazing effect that their words and actions would have—they were just doing what felt right. Bookmark this page to learn about more inspirational animal advocates each month. Who knows—maybe one day you’ll be our next amazing advocate!

Amazing Advocate:

Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed Al Saud

We are inspired by HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud for his dedication to fostering a more sustainable and compassionate world. A prince in every sense of the word, our Amazing Advocate gives his mom and dad credit for raising him right in just about every interview we’ve seen! Who doesn’t love that? And that’s just the start! Let’s dig deep into the awesome energy Prince Khaled puts out into the world, and all the good that’s come of it.

Prince Khaled is an outspoken advocate for human health, the humane treatment of animals, and our environment. He’s imbued with a deep sense of compassion, and is equally effective as a businessman.

Born in Stanford, CA, Prince Khaled was raised in Riyadh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He could have chosen many paths, making his compassionate and progressive lifestyle even more laudable. He’s in a position to influence gamechangers on a global scale, and luckily for us, he knows how to make that happen! He’s the Founding Chairman of KBW Ventures, a firm that specializes in ethical (and successful!) investments. KBW’s investment portfolio includes a variety of meat and dairy alternatives as well as new food technologies that offer a real chance to end the concept of animals in our food chain. KBW’s investments speak to Prince Khaled’s keen eye for long-term sensibilities and that’s something else we are all for: his focus on big-picture victories like eliminating animal suffering, improving human health, and addressing the climate crisis. We LOVE a strategic vegan, and HRH is leading the way, showing others how it gets DONE!

In his own country, Prince Khaled is well-known for the strides he has made in helping make Saudi Arabia a pioneering force in green architecture and healthy living. He serves as the President of the Saudi Sports for All Federation under the Ministry of Sports, with the mandate of empowering Saudi society to embrace a healthy lifestyle. He is also a Board Member of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, helping to encourage the growth and success of the country’s elite athletes.

Our very favorite thing about HRH: Prince Khaled speaks out for all animals—farmed, hunted, or otherwise abused. He was a crucial member of the team that ended the use of donkeys to carry tourists at Petra in Jordan, and has acted as a matching donor to organizations fighting to end poaching. An ethical vegan, Prince Khaled stands as a convincing example of the many benefits of choosing a life of kindness.

Anyone who follows Prince Khaled on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter will find his social media accounts surprisingly down-to-Earth and fun for a man with such serious interests. It’s this naturally affable quality, as much as his business acumen, that makes him such a successful advocate for animals. Prince Khaled, on behalf of all the human and non-human animals for whom you’re creating a better future, we can’t THANK YOU—and your parents—enough! We’re SO glad you’re on our team!

Amazing Advocate:

Genesis Butler

We love Genesis. At age three, she asked her mom where meat came from, and immediately stopped eating it. From there, she turned her whole family vegan. And now? She is a huge force in turning ALL THE PEOPLE vegan.

As a child, Genesis knew something was wrong. She became vegan for ethical reasons, for the love of animals, and to reduce their suffering. But as she got older, she learned how using animals as food impacts the environment, and people, too. By the time she was 10, Genesis was already delivering truths about the environmental devastation caused by the animal agriculture machine via her own TEDx Talk.

She also addresses how unjust the industry is: factory farms house thousands of animals in unsanitary conditions. They spray the overflow of animal waste onto nearby fields, allowing contaminants to enter the air as an easily inhaled mist. People nearby these places suffer from lung and eye ailments, rashes, and have reported constant nausea and headaches—they can’t even sit outside. Is it a coincidence that these factory farms spring up in black, LatinX, and lower socio-economic towns and neighborhoods? Workers are paid very little to labor long hours in unsafe conditions, with very few people daring to speak up against big ag.

Genesis isn’t afraid. Her outspoken, compassionate approach to activism has earned her so many accolades: She has served as PETA’s Young Animal Activist of the Year in 2019. She won Animal Hero Kid’s Sir Paul McCartney’s Young Veg Advocate award, and so many more. She’s also been featured in several films, including The Invisible Vegan, a documentary about the lives of vegan people of color.

But she isn’t satisfied with walking the walk and talking the talk. She’s also raising the funds! She started an organization called Genesis for Animals, that raises funds for animal rescues and sanctuaries. During the COVID pandemic, she took he advocacy to the next level, and began Youth Climate Save, which is an offshoot of the Climate Save Movement. It’s the first youth-led group that focuses on the connection between animal agriculture and the climate change.

We’re not the only ones who think Genesis is a superhero. She’s been immortalized as the star of her own Marvel comic! But our favorite thing about Genesis isn’t her awards, her incredible stage presence, or her many honors. It’s HER. Her heart, her strength, her compassion and all that she represents. Genesis Butler is living proof that it’s never too early, and you’re never too young, to take action and change the world. Thanks, Genesis, for ALL that you do!

Amazing Advocates:

Slaughter Free NYC

We’ve partnered up with Slaughter Free NYC to support the brave work they’re doing. In NYC, there are 80 slaughterhouses, many of which are wet markets that sell live animals kept in filthy deplorable conditions. They are harmful for the local communities in which they are located, the workers who face trauma daily, and the environment. They are deadly for the animals who suffer there. Many pandemics, including COVID-19, started in wet markets just like these. Together, Jill Carnegie and Maureen Medina have been working nonstop to get these inhumane and unsanitary markets shut down

There are over 80 slaughterhouses in NYC, and many are wet markets, where pandemics including COVID-19 begin. Several are located near schools, where children can easily transport contaminants to classrooms, and ALL are in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Until now, reporting the multiple violations (including blood, feces and body parts on sidewalks, hearing loud animal screams) has been a maze of impossibility, leaving those who live near these dens of death feeling hopeless. Slaughter Free NYC has created an easy reporting platform right on their site, returning power to the voiceless exploited residents of these neighborhoods—and the workers who suffer a higher rate from PTSD and addiction than the general public. .

Maureen Medina is an advocate for both human and non-human animals, and asserts that all oppression is connected. She is not only the co-organizer of Slaughter Free NYC, she is also the creator of an initiative called Leave in Peace (LIP), which focuses on day laborers and the human victims of animal agriculture, in alignment with the idea that none of us are free unless all of us are free. While she engages in street activism, Maureen highly encourages activists to research, be actively involved in policy change, and build partnerships with social justice groups in order to expand our reach.

Jill Carnegie is a multi-faceted advocate who believes that we must use our unique strengths to fight for animal liberation from all angles. She is the co-organizer of Slaughter Free NYC and Campaign Strategist for the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos. Previously, Jill was instrumental in relaunching the NYC horse carriage campaign with NYCLASS. As co-founder of NUMU Vegan Cheese, Jill focuses on the normalization of vegan consumer habits. Tamerlaine has worked with Jill in various capacities—she rescues animals at every opportunity.

Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve is honoring Slaughter Free NYC with this selection in recognition of their humanitarian and animal advocacy. Like Jill and Maureen, we feel that until there is justice and compassion for all people, we cannot achieve the same for animals.

Amazing Advocate of the Decade:

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE

Jane_Goodall_2015.jpg

“The least I can do is speak for those who cannot speak out for themselves.”

Dr. Jane Goodall was only 26 years old when she accepted an offer to leave England and travel to remote rainforests of Tanzania, where she would live and study chimpanzees—which she did by living among them, rather than studying them from afar. It was a new and uncertain method, but Dr. Goodall felt the only way she could know about these animals was to live among them.

Her findings changed human understanding of animals. She discovered that chimpanzees make and use tools, and that they have a highly structured society, with rich emotional bonds. In essence, her work showed the world that chimpanzees are not too different from us, and began the ongoing work of dismantling speciesism. Her research grew the animal welfare and species conservation movements well beyond chimpanzees, to include the emotional welfare of non-human animals. She was first scientist to publish work about their emotional lives.

Dr. Goodall’s compassion extends beyond the furry and four-legged to include the less hairy primates….people. Dr. Goodall was one of the first conservationists to promote the idea that you could not expect to save a species if local people did not have their basic needs yet. The Institute addresses environmental and humanitarian concerns, and aims to reduce poverty, food insecurity, education and more through a series of programs. One program, Roots and Shoots, calls on children globally to continue the important work Dr. Goodall started and stay hopeful.

Dr. Goodall has served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She has also been “knighted” by Queen Elizabeth II, making her a Dame of the British Empire. She has been awarded the French Legion of Honor, the UNESCO Gold Medal Award, and so many more. Her legacy of hope continues through her many books, and programs.

Her latest cookbook, #Eat Meat Less, is amazing, AND available on Amazon or through your local bookseller. Read more about this Animal Hero.
